Moreover, the eccentricities of society which he so brilliantly satirized appear to have made a deep impression upon his own thinking and disposition. As his scepticism increased, he became more and more melancholy, till finally in 1836 he wrote in his last celebrated article, Figaro en el cementario, that his heart was a sepulcher in which hope was buried, despite the fact that while visiting Paris and London in the year before he was received with distinction. On February 13, 1837, 'owing to the sudden termination of an unfortunate amour, he committed sui cide. Grief at his untimely death was universal, and his burial was attended by Spain's celebrities.
