Gopnik's writing captured me from the start--he has a way of pulling his readers into the world he and his wife were living in at the end of the 90s...a world of possibilities and brave dreams to be followed. The book's chapters were originally articles submitted to The New Yorker, so they don't read fluidly like a novel but they are still well-written and complete. I especially loved the chapter on finding a gym in Paris. You will be crying (with laughter) by the end as he describes the endless appointments, forms, and strange looks he receives in his quest to simply get a good workout. Anyone who's ever wondered what expat life would be like would enjoy this book.
