Now, they begin to give her a place on the school committee, and even to let her vote on school matters, thinking that mothers ought to take an interest in the education of their children. In my boyhood days this would have been considered very unwomanly, and in all but a few parts of the United States it is still thought improper for women to take the same interest in politics that men do, and to vote at town and State elections. So they cannot help to make the laws they must obey, or choose the men who are to carry on the government, for this is considered none of their business. Man, you see, still wants to feel himself superior to woman in something, and able to get along without her advice or aid. She has eyes, like him, and he can no longer deny her the right to see, even if she turns astronomer and gazes at the stars through her telescope. She has limbs, and he has always been ready to have her do her full share of lifting and carrying heavy burdens; she may walk and run as much as her skirts will allow her, and she may even shorten her dress a little and wear trousers in order to ride the bi-cycle. She has a voice, and may sing or preach or lecture. She has brains, and may read and think, study Latin and Greek, write books, paint pictures, practise law and medicine and architecture. She may now, for all he cares, do almost everything a man does except vote and be voted for, though there is nothing difficult about that. Government is only a kind of housekeeping, and it is surely woman's business to keep house.
