This 14-track collection issued by Fuel 2000 is perhaps the most well-rounded of the Freddy Fender compilations on the market. It's a bilingual set that showcases songs that were hits on both sides of the border. Stylistically, it's got Tejano, country, rockabilly, Tex-Mex, norteño, you name it. There are beautiful readings of standards here, such as "Vaya con Dios" and "Cielito Lindo," as well as a fingerpopping Tejano conjunto "Rancho Grande." In addition, there are killer live versions of "I Can't Stop Loving You" and "Whiskey River." The latter melds country-honky tonk-stomp with polka-flavored conjunto. The two most beautiful numbers, however, may be the ballads "Estaré Contigo Cuando Triste Estás" and the vintage soul croon in closer "Un Momento." They both showcase the depth and tenderness in Fender's expressive delivery and phrasing. This is a fine set and as diverse a comp as you are likely to find. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi
