Naguib Mafouz is probably best known for his story Midaq Alley, part of a trilogy of novelletes that won him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1988. He was born in 1911 and in each tale delves deeply into everyday life in Egypt from World War I through the latter half of the twentieth century.
In Palace Walk we find ourselves among the people of 1917 Cairo. The author paints a lively city which is at once metropolitan and yet has not lost touch with its village sensibilities. He focuses primarily on the family of a middle-class merchant and lovingly fleshes out each member vividly. And, as the country is about to undergo change, the people in it find they must deal with their heredity as it conflicts with time.
For those of you reluctant to read foreign literature this is one you will find this easy to understand and difficult to put away.
