Considering a range of works, including van Eycks Arnolfini Portrait, Bruegels Netherlandish Proverbs, and Rubenss Life of Marie de Mdicis series, Carroll examines the ways in which these Netherlandish painters seized on that imagery and creatively transformed it into the materials of art.
