Luminous Language
David Jones stands as one of the 20th Century's great artists and poets, and certainly one of the least known of the major poets in the English language. His inscriptions are one place where the work in language and image meet, in luminous art that mixes Latin, English, and Welsh, in works painted (not calligraphed) on paper. As works on their own, or as companions to either Jones's great paintings, or his poems (primary among them The Anathemata and In Parenthesis), the inscriptions well reward those who peruse them, and I would be happy and amazed to have this volume in my library.
