As a scientist, I don't really think much about monsters (e.g. vampires, werewolves, trolls) or declare my belief or disbelief in them. So reading this book was a guilty pleasure for me. After many hours in the office dealing with no-nonsense experiments and articles, I find some comfort sipping on hot tea and reading the next exciting "true" story in this book. It includes hundreds of short reports (a handful quite long) about real people experiencing encounters with a variety of monsters. The "facts" probably run into the thousands.
There are nine chapters to the book: ghosts, manimals, lake and sea monsters, bloodsuckers, werecreatures, the wee people, creatures who serve the darkness, inner earth empire of evil, and monsters from outer space. I enjoyed all of the chapters about equally as much except for the last one (probably because I don't really think aliens belongs in this book). Steiger, the author, firmly believes in monsters and thinks we should too. An interesting theory put forth is that these monsters may actually be entities from other dimensions (think the Sliders TV series), which makes them more down-to-earth, in a way. It is also suggested that they may be spirits that are able to take any form (i.e. any kind of monster).
I must admit, that at times after reading this book, I found it difficult to sleep. One of my worst "nightmares" was that a succubus would appear out of a dark corner of my room to satisfy my sexual desires (only to turn into a hideous rotting woman or something, either before or after the act). Never mind that it might be real; just having such a dream would be bad enough given that I live alone in a rather big house with big rooms. The book also contains a helpful index at the back. Overall, a good buy and worthy of a place in your library as reference material on the occult. You will probably find yourself coming back to it from time to time instead of watching a horror movie. If you liked this book, I'd also recommend John Michael Greer's, "Monsters: An Investigator's Guide to Magical Beings".
