In spite of all these obstacles, they somehow persevere and are able to leave for the United States when the doctor's tour of duty ends in Vietnam. Now, with that challenge met, she needs to overcome prejudice in America, learn the language and try to make it in a culture totally foreign to her. Can an American Jewish doctor and Vietnamese Catholic, peasant girl whose family has only known extreme poverty all their lives, find happiness together despite misgivings from, even, his own family?
