The present volume records the most important events up to the capitulation of Monterey. Every effort has been made to Obtain the most authentic materials; and the author is under obligations to many officers of the army for items of interest. The official reports appended will form the best collateral evi dence of the truthfulness of the details in the description of the battle, and to them the author particularly refers the reader.
