A slightly slipshod release for Mooncrest, with unspecific notes and no personnel credits, but otherwise a good album. A slightly slipshod release for Mooncrest, with unspecific notes and no personnel credits, but otherwise a good album. The original lineup apparently got back together in 1996 to record new versions of their classic hits ("Meet Me on the Corner," "Fog on the Tyne," "Run for Home," "Clear White Light" etc.) as well as covers of classic rock & roll like Ritchie Valens' "Donna," the Cascades' "Rhythm of the Rain," and a medley that includes "La Bamba" and "Little Darlin'." If the latter seem a bit bizarre, they do work in a manner reminiscent of those Fairport Convention offshoot efforts such as Morris On and their oldies covers, and they are pleasing. The re-recordings of their own stuff are another matter -- "Fog on the Tyne," which they've recut now about as often as Chubby Checker has re-recorded "The Twist," is too loud, as though attempting to re-create one of the many concert renditions, when a little subtlety might have worked better; "Lady Eleanor" sounds like a good Moody Blues number, which may not be a compliment; "Clear White Light" and "Love You More Than I Can Say" are engaging enough, but the one outstanding track here is "Run for Home," which never sounded more Springsteen-esque (like a lost Born To Run track, down to its pseudo-wall-of-sound synthesizer backing and prominent sax) than it does here. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
