San Francisco quintet, Oranj Symphonette, follow up their stunning debut of Mancini covers with a delightful set of new arrangements of familiar film themes that goes beyond their initial album. Also energized on The Oranj Album are Strayhorn/Ellington ("Chelsea Bridge" and "Satin Doll"), John Barry ("Beat Girl" and "Midnight Cowboy"), Burt Bacharach ("After the Fox") and more. Cellist, and famous son, Matt Brubeck's (Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, Club Foot Orchestra) clarinet- and accordion-led interpretation of Elmer Bernstein's hoary "Magnificent Seven" is worth the price of admission alone. Brubeck picks up the bass for a poignant and show-stopping interlude in "Bananas" (Marvin Hamlisch). Mancini is definitely not forgotten, though. These Bay Area all-stars (Tom Waits, Marc Ribot, the B-52s, Bill Frisell, Wayne Horvitz, PJ Harvey and more have accessed this talent) take time to interpret "Arabesque," and "Dreamsville." Keyboardist Rob Burger (student of Yusef Lateef and Archie Shepp) contributes an arrangement of "Up, Up and Away" where the melody takes a bouncy ride from piano to baritone horn, to wah trumpet to tenor sax, to clarinet to alto flute, to synthesizer and beyond. The strongest track of the disc is the impressive glorification of "Call Me Mr. Tibbs" (Quincy Jones), introduced by a duck call. The result is a Farfisa jam augmented by horns and percussion for a raucous romp. ~ Tom Schulte, Rovi
