Villa-Lobos is the most generously represented, with two substantial trios, one for oboe, clarinet, and bassoon and one for clarinet, bassoon, and piano. The first, written in the early '20s after the composer's contact with Stravinsky, shows some Stravinskian traits -- quirky, irregular rhythms and especially pungent harmonies. It has an individuality and character that make it far more than just imitation Stravinsky (whose influence was virtually inescapable at the time). Its brazen flaunting of its dissonance and its aggressively off-kilter rhythms make it beguilingly saucy and impudent. The Fantasia Concertante for piano, clarinet, and bassoon comes from late in the composer's career and is less daring, but it too has some of Villa-Lobos' brash energy.
