The first three chapters of the book cover classical optical phenomena of wave propagation, interference, diffraction and polarization, with simple explanations of coherence, imaging, and optical filtering. The following five chapters discuss the basic principles of interferometry, holography, speckle methods, moire techniques, two- and three-dimensional photoelasticity, fiber optic sensors, and other optical techniques. Special emphasis is placed on modern aspects such as video techniques (including an extensive treatment of the video camera), digital image processing, polarizing state vectors, and fiber optics. Requires no background in optics and very little in physics.
