Quick review. The book focuses heavily on which card to play. Most beginners learn that. What I was hoping for was help in choosing which suit to lead,

Outstanding
This book gives a very comprehensive insight into opening leads against different kinds of contracts. (What to infer from the bidding (both of what the opponents and your partner bid or did NOT bid) and what to make of those clues together with the cards you yourself hold.
While no book can give you all the answers, this book teaches you a lot about asking yourself the right questions: did the opponents jump quickly to game? Or did they drag themselves there? Are there any high card points left over for partner? Why - when partner ought to have enough points to bid - did he fail to overcall at the one-level? Might he perhaps be short in some side suit?
And once you have determined upon the suit to lead, it also gives very good explanations into what card you should lead and why.
At the end of each chapter there's a tiny quiz allowing you to test yourself upon your comprehension of the matter. And last but not least the book is written in a very readable way. While there are a lot of bridge books I could cheerfully have thrown out the window after a few pages, this one I managed to read all the way through very quickly, amazed at the amount of things I was learning. I certainly didn't become an expert overnight but this book advanced my understanding quite a bit. I absolutely recommend it to other aspiring players.
