What if Philip Marlowe survived all those sappings down through the years and made it to 72? Interesting cane in hand, he embarks on one last(?) adventure into Mexico of the 1980's. Osborne knows two things -- good Marlowe means finding the pain in everybody (including Phil) and really giving you a sense of place. He succeeds on both marks. This is not the wise cracking, confident man we once knew, but a tired warrior who needs to fill the emptiness with... something. Osborne wisely keeps Marlowe from bedding women 1/3 his age as in some of the lesser Bond movies. This is a tale of age, regret, crime, revenge, internal pain, and yet after all, the kind of integrity that Marlowe has always displayed and will always display even as eternity beckons.
