When One Voice: Pride came out in 1990, Ruffhouse Records had yet to become a big player in the music world. The Philadelphia label (which was distributed by Enigma at the time) had put out some decent singles by various Philly rappers, but it had to yet to sign a distribution deal with Columbia and put out multi-platinum albums by Cypress Hill, the Fugees, Kris Kross, and others. Emphasizing rap's socio-political side, this compilation was arguably the best release that Ruffhouse put out during its pre-Columbia days. The CD's most compelling track, Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Society's Creation," describes how a cocaine-addicted baby grows up to be a killer. Mix-A-Lot is best known for fun tunes like "My Hooptie" and "Baby Got Back," but "Society's Creation" demonstrates that when he put his mind to it, he could be every bit as powerful a socio-poltiical commentator as Ice-T, KRS-One, Melle Mel, or Chuck D. Also quite enjoyable are "The Bush," Special Ed's account of life in the Flatbush, Brooklyn ghetto, Blackmale's "Caught Up with Suckaizm," and Mac Money's "Respect Yourself," which is based on the Staple Singers' early-'70s hit. On "Decade," Ruffhouse co-founder Joe "The Butcher" Nicolo looks back on political events of the '80s by uniting a forceful hip-hop track with samples of Ronald Reagan, George Bush, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, Margaret Thatcher, Tom Brokaw, and others. One Voice: Pride is worth picking up if you come across as a copy. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi
