Once an Eagle is one of the three great war mini series, along with Winds of War and War and Remembrance. Sam Elliot probably played his best role over a lengthy career in movies. (I am sure that he is also the voice for the Dodge Ram truck commercials) The four lead characters in the series, Elliot, Cliff Potts, Glenn Ford and Amy Irving also deliver excellet performances. I saw the series in 1976 and wanted to see it again and was delighted when it came out on DVD. The quality of the DVD is excellent. What I didn't remember between the intrigue of the differences between the Elliot and Potts characters and the excellent war footage was the volume of soap opera drama that kept creaping into the story. I guess that was the seventies and it dates the production, but only by a bit. That aside, I was really glad I made the purchase as I enjoyed it immensely and will probably view it again in about six months.
