David Goldblatt. Near Fine in Very Good- jacket. Quarto. 9 1/4" x 11 3.4" Unpaginated, photos numbered 1-56. Red cloth boards with titles on spine in gold. Binding tight and spine straight, corners of volume square (very minor bump to bottom back forecorner, but corner itself is straight). Signed by 1991 Nobel Prize for Literature winner Nadine Gordimer to famed book collector Burt Britton on front free endpaper. Slight age toning to front and back endpapers, but contents of book show no sign of toning. Volume presents Goldblatt's photos in 3 sections, the first of which is accompanied by an essay by Gordimer. Black jacket, presented under mylar. Titles in gold and gray on spine and front cover of jacket. Black and white photo by Goldblatt (about 4x6") on front cover. Black and white photo by Goldblatt occupies entire back of jacket. Mild age toning to flyleaves of jacket, and a small sticker showing the price of a previous sale is on the front flyleaf. Jacket is intact, with chipping at upper front corner and a small tear near top spine end on front. Shelfwear to bottom front edge of jacket and spine ends. Small crease at upper fore-corner on back of jacket. Goldblatt's black and white photos of mine workers and their surroundings form a remarkable document of the time and place, and served as the foundation for a long and distinguished career behind the camera.

Binding tight and solid. On the Mines is David Goldblatt's influential 1973 publication. Goldblatt grew up in the South African town of Randfontein, which was shaped by the social culture and financial success of the gold mines surrounding it. When these mines started to fail in the mid-1960s Goldblatt began taking photos of them, which form the basis of On the Mines. The book features an essay on the human and political dimensions of mining in South Africa by Nobel laureate Nadine Gordimer, whose writing has long influenced Goldblatt with three original chapters--The Witwatersrand: a Time and Tailings, Shaftsinking and Mining Men-" EB; 9.1 X 6.6 X 1.1 inches.
