The 2006 expanded reissue of On the Threshold of a Dream -- which, at least initially, was limited to European release -- may not be as ambitious as the double-CD "Deluxe Edition" releases accorded Days of Future Passed or In Search of the Lost Chord, but it's still mighty impressive. For starters, there's the sound -- this hybrid SACD/CD disc has been newly remastered as well as remixed to SACD 5.1 Surround Sound for the Super-Audio layer, and either sound configuration is worth hearing. The stereo CD mix reveals little details in the playing, from Justin Hayward's multi-layered acoustic guitars to Graeme Edge's percussion -- and the harmony vocals by almost everyone -- previously difficult to hear. The 5.1 mix, based on Tony Clarke's early '70s quadraphonic remix of the album, is even better, and puts you right in the center of the group, with every instrumental and vocal part clearly delineated. The nine bonus tracks are equally attractive for different reasons, comprised as they are of previously unheard, unedited takes, outtakes, and live-in-the-studio radio performances -- the uncut version of "In the Beginning" is entertaining, while the extended version of "So Deep Within You" reveals details unheard in the released cut, and the original, unedited sections of the closing suite are interesting to hear without interruption; but the real treat is the string of live-in-the-studio versions of "Lovely to See You," "Send Me No Wine," "So Deep Within You," and "Are You Sitting Comfortably," which offer different, leaner, and more interesting interpretations, and fascinating variations on almost every instrument and most of the vocal accompaniment. The annotation is extremely detailed and the booklet also re-creates and expands the opera libretto-style insert that came with the original LP. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
