Excerpt from On the Relations Between England and Rome: During the Earlier Portion of the Reign of Henry III How this power was brought to bear upon the condition of England in the year 1216 must be our next consideration. There can be no doubt that the preservation of the Plantagenet line on the throne of England, and the defeat of the prince, chosen by so large a portion of the barons, Louis, the son of Philip Augustus, were entirely due to the influence of Rome. The immediate agent employed by the Pope was the legate, Cardinal Gualo or Guala, a man who has been very unfairly described8 as a feeble avaricious man, who seems to have plundered without shame, and to have intrigued without success. Far from this, he appears to have seen with great acuteness the immediate steps to be taken at a time when a false step would have lost all. Thus he saw that the first thing to be done was to have the young king crowned; and this was done at Gloucester, hastily, with as many spiritual and temporal peers as could be mustered for the occasion. The king was compelled to swear that he would give peace and rever ence to the church, to take an oath of good government to the people, and of homage to the Roman Church and the Pope, and that he would pay the tribute which John had undertaken to pay annually to the Roman see. The legate then renewed the sea. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at ...
