Interesting and engaging memoir of a woman who took on manual labor despite having a PhD, as an escape from personal demons - if she had to stay focused to stay alive in a dangerous job, she couldn't spare the attention her family dysfunction, drinking, sexual adventures and other addictions would otherwise require. Wildly different from the later "Nickel and Dimed" by another PhD exploring underpaid work in the 90's. Niemann's personal demons are central to her story and the work she took on was hard, dirty and potentially lethal. There's a very useful glossary of railroad terms appended. I wish I had known it was there as I struggled to understand a lot of the railroad jargon. Worth a read, esp if you like memoirs..
