New. Size: 5x0x7; New. No dust jacket as issued. Brand New! Support Pacific Northwest Independent Booksellers! Trade paperback (US). Glued binding. 312 p. Vintage International (Paperback). Audience: General/trade. Nevil Shute s most powerful novel a bestseller for decades after its 1957 publication is an unforgettable vision of a post-apocalyptic world. After a nuclear World War III has destroyed most of the globe, the few remaining survivors in southern Australia await the radioactive cloud that is heading their way and bringing certain death to everyone in its path. Among them is an American submarine captain struggling to resist the knowledge that his wife and children in the United States must be dead. Then a faint Morse code signal is picked up, transmitting from somewhere near Seattle, and Captain Towers must lead his submarine crew on a bleak tour of the ruined world in a desperate search for signs of life. Both terrifying and intensely moving, On the Beach is a remarkably convincing portrait of how ordinary people might face the most unimaginable nightmare.

With everybody firing off their nuclear weapons the world becomes a place where life itself can no longer exist. Gradually the cloud of death works its way south from the northern latitudes. The story, set in Australia, follows the lives of people unable to accept the inevitable until the bleak ending. There is no happy ending. This book should be required reading for all, especially those with their fingers on the button. Stop and think. Not what will be the immediate result of my actions, but what will be the long term outcome for all mankind ?

Classic Book
I had never read this novel, nor watched the movie. The story, written years ago, could be from now. The book is timeless. I have read many of Nevil Shute's books, but this one really stands out & I will never forget it.

Great Story
Very good novel. Had me thinking about what could have happened in a nuclear global war.
