A invaluable road map to romance writing
For the beginning writer, award winning author Leigh Michaels has provided this practical guidebook. Harlequin has published more than eighty of her novels and several works of nonfiction. She holds a BA in Journalism, and is an online writing instructor for Barnes and Noble as well as Gotham Writers? Workshop. You can trust her track record.
I had little thought of going the publishing route. I just wanted my stories to be shiny, fire-red ferraris, not dull, lackluster edsels. I?ve purchased a variety of such ?road maps? but Leigh?s outran them all. As a new ?driver? but with a sequel already written, I wish I had read On Writing Romance before I had set out my first journey into romance writing Untold miles of useless words and sentences have since been left by the wayside.
Leigh?s practical process showed my where I had made wrong turns in my plot, let minor characters sit in the driver?s seat, backed me out of dead end chapters, parked my impatience long enough so I could let my creative juices flow, and inspired me to steer for home?a home for my story. I?ve earmarked Appendix A: Query Letter (to publishers) and have written synopses for both books.
Let me but my brights on to show you some highlights. Leigh's manual includes a multitude of literary references from a variety of authors. She didn?t just tout her own works. From her 264 pages I learned about genre, characterization, POV(point of view), chapter construction, believable plot structure, dialogue use and misuse, readers? satisfaction as well as publishers? expectation.
So take a spin over to 'your cart" and get this guidebook. It?s much cheaper than a workshop--especially at Alibris great prices--and is a invaluable resource you will reference over and over again.
