Might not the thought of his child, now alone in the world but for him, impel him to make a tardy fight for his life? Might he not, at the eleventh hour, break the silence he had so obstinately maintained? And I had yet another blow for him. One that I felt certain would strike him in the heart! I felt almost as much of a brute as I did when dragging her story from poor little Doris' reluctant lips, or when patiently going over and over her testimony with her until it should be in a form in which it could be presented in Court. "I did succeed," I went on, speaking slowly and distinctly, "in finding Doris, the little daughter of the defendant. When you have heard her story, gentlemen, you will agree with me that to-send Strickland to his death would be a gross miscarriage of justice. That is all for the present, gentlemen."
