This album, which is subtitled "Homage to Molavi," is a wonderful example of the passion and beauty of Persian music and the romantic poetry on which it is frequently based. Jallalidin Molavi (known in the West as Rumi) was a 13th century theologian, now considered the greatest of Iranian mystical poets, whose writing pointed out the connection between "earthly" love and the journey toward a "higher" love, urging readers to embark on their own journeys of self-discovery. Molavi's heavenly poetry provides the lyrics for five of the six stirring songs here, matched with the equally poetic music of one of Iran's most distinguished ensembles. The results are incredibly engaging, with the impassioned vocals of guest Shahram Nazeri driving the songs to ever greater heights of ecstasy. Though not quite as rousing as the similarly spiritual music of Sufi master Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, this is a great record resplendent with power and passion. ~ Bret Love, Rovi
