I read this book on the recommendation of a friend. I realy enjoy "historical fiction" and found this book to fit the bill wonderfully.

Super Sassy Southern Heroine
I actually stumbled upon this book at a yard sale about seven years ago in paperback and have since bought three hardcovers: one to keep, two to give away. The length of this epic tale is a bit daunting at over 700 pages, but OH is it ever worth it. Do yourself a favor and invest the time in reading this hysterically funny and so-true-to-life story of Lucy Marsden, the Oldest Living Confederate Widow, retelling her life story partly in the present from her nursing home and partly in first person back in time, as it happened. This book contains oodles of civil war history but that is NOT even why I love it--Lucy is hands-down the kind of old lady I hope to become: sassy, smart, wise and young-as-ever at heart. She got that way often through some very hard times, which include being married at 14 to a 50-something civil war veteran suffering from PTS disorder and flashbacks, who is a sex addict and unfaithful to her, and that is just the beginning. There is NO depressing Oprah book club-type stuff in here, and no inappropriate sex scenes: just real life ups and downs that will make you hoot out loud as Lucy tells the funny parts, and grab for tissues at her heartbreaks. This is the kind of book that stays with you--seven years later I still find myself looking through my ups and downs through Lucy's eyes. BUY THIS BOOK, then share it with a friend.
