xii, 505; x, 523pp. Octavo. First edition. Two volumes, uniformly bound. Dark blue publisher's cloth with gold gilt outlined illustrations embossed on the front of both boards and gilt lettering stamped to the front boards and spines. The edges of the boards are beveled. Marbled edges and endpapers. Heavily illustrated throughout with black and white plates and drawings within the text, two colour folding maps and one two-page map in the first volume and six maps in the second volume. A touch of wear to the head and tail of both spines and corners. Both volumes are tight and clean and in very good condition. Arctic Bibliography 17324. Narrative of the second Fram Expedition, 1898-1902, under Sverdrup; this expedition filled in the last major unknown area on the map of the western Arctic and was published in English the following year as New Lands with some appendices added. This set is the dark blue cloth variant, which appears to be more scarce than the red cloth variant.
