I have loads of books on how to write fiction (70+ at the last scan of the bookshelf). Many seem to have been written at the behest of an agent, to an author, to make use of that "angle" they have just pontificated over with the aid of a pint... a single mediocre idea stretched into book form.
I have come to view "how to write" books in terms of bang per buck. One idea in one book costing 8 pounds (or dollars or whatever) is a one eighth of a bang per buck.
This book is not like those others. "Crafting Scenes" is rich in good advice, and examples, and explanations. Packed full of them. I would say better than 100 bangs per buck.
The only comparable book on my bookshelf is Dwight V Swain's Techniques of the $selling Writer (and possibly Walter Campbell/Stanley Vestal's "Writing: Advice and Devices".
I heartily recommend Obstfeld's "Crafting Scenes" to anyone learning to write fiction. I only wish I had discovered this book years ago.
It shows me how to craft scenes that will produce a specific response in a reader and play a particular role in both story and character arc.
