Alright, this takes the cake for the worst read of the year for me. Absolutely, 100% garbage. I don't dish out that criticism easily as 1/5 stars is a score I've only graced 2 books so far with, this included. Nothing But Blackened Teeth felt like a very low effort horror satire, and doesn't advertise itself as such. I get the thing was a short novella, but wow she could have made it so much less of a chore. A 2 and a half hour audiobook felt like 5 hours, and then ended so abruptly it felt like a prank. I genuinely asked myself, "you're kidding, that was seriously where it ended?"
From the very beginning you're bombarded by empty, drab character development about characters that just clearly hate eachother and this is about how deep that development goes. They just hate eachother, none of them want to be there, and all the while I'm slowly knowing how they feel. None of them are particularly relatable, and the main character is an extremely indifferent, frustrating person to listen to. Inbetween those bouts of cruddy character dev, you get some pretty well described glimpses at the ghost, as she basically just watches the characters meltdown, totally irrelevant to the story wherein she is supposed to be the main event. Instead it's like the ghost is just reading along with us, experiencing things instead of doing anything. The characters consistently go on about "how things happen in horror movies." While the main character drones on in indifference. They then fulfill their own prophecies about horror movies only slightly, kill someone in their group, everything is fine, and they go home. The end.
