All hail the time when, free from doubt and care, My ransom'd soul shall rest securely there! When I who here life's troublous journey trod, Shall wake at once to glory and to God! He visits the earth in mist, Thick mist and drizzly rain; He covers the hill from sight at will, And creeps over all the plain, --His visage you see wherever you be, On land or stormy main. A mantle of grey he wears, Unvaried all the day; When Sol would blink through cranny or chink, He scares him quite away; The stars you behold look faint and cold Beneath his sombre sway. He ruleth the ocean main, While fleets pass to and fro O'er the giant wave, the mariner's grave, Where the storm and tempest blow; Prompting the ire of Neptune dire To work sad overthrow. Ah me, the sorrow and wail! The gloomy month, 'tis said, When people half mad, predicament sad, Go fairly out of their head; And, shocking to say, jump into the bay, Or hang themselves instead! I sit in the house and sigh, The family none come near, Some lying a-bed of pains in the head, Or tooth-ache more severe; My room full of smoke, I nearly choke, No family compact here. The Muse is fickle to woo; Spondee and dactyl chime No more together this dreary weather--I cannot get on with rhyme. A bard would make a sorry mistake To write this sorrowful time. I reach down fiddle and bow, In hope to drive the blues Away from my cot, to mend my lot, But fiddle auu bow refusu; Then the 'Times' at hand, I take my stand, And read the national news. Hey for the daizied May! Hey for the cowslipp'd June! The primrose pale on hillock, in dale, And songbirds all in tune! Ofc the time when.
