Handsome, super tight second edition of this 1961 study--with choice autograph addition: Tipped to front flyleaf is a Typed Note Signed from Thomas, 1p, heavy stock 5½" X 3¼" buff postal card, Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island, 25 July 1936. Addressed to future notable Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Near fine. Cryptic "I wish to express my appreciation for your note of July 20th, " boldly signed in full in blue ink. Thomas (1884-1968) was known as the "Conscience of America, " a Socialist reformer who helped found the American Civil Liberties Union in 1920 and ran for U.S. president no fewer than six times; his books include "The Conscientious Objector in America" (1923) and "What's the Matter with New York? " (1932).
