John Walters was born in Holland but joined the Blues at the beginning of the War and served until the end. The book contains a day-to-day record of his travels with the Army through all of the Virginia campaigns. It gives the reader an understanding of the feelings, hopes and fears of the common soldier and his evualation of those in authority over him. Once Norfolk was abandoned in early 1862, Pvt. Walters was cut off from his home town friends. He was single and was out of touch with his blood relatives in Holland. Yet he stuck it out till the end. The book is not for the casual reader but very interesting for those who seek detail. The editor's footnotes should be read with caution as there are a number of misstatements and poor conclusions in them.
