Markings on front end page, else unmarked. "After working in the Foreign Office during World War II, Denys Sutton embarked on a career as an art critic. In 1946 he published an anthology, Watteau's Les charmes de la vie, and his first biography, Matisse, and two years later he published Picasso, Blue and Pink Periods. He worked as an art critic for Country Life and the Financial Times, was a salesroom correspondent for the Daily Telegraph and continued to write books on art. Sutton became the editor of the arts magazine Apollo in 1962 and remained in that position for a quarter of a century. He also organized many exhibitions at the Royal Academy and elsewhere.
