"No Stone Unturned" provides a good overview of the work of NecroSearch International. For those who aren't familiar with NecroSearch, they are a group of forensic specialists, many of whom are from Colorado (USA) who have conducted research for many years into the manner in which bodies decompose, much like Dr. Bill Bass's "Body Farm" in Tenn.
In contrast to the "Body Farm," Necrosearch has primarily focused their research on determining which scientific methods are most useful for detecting the remains of humans that have met their death from natural and unnatural causes and have subsequently either gone missing (e.g. if a person died of natural causes while hiking in a remote wilderness), or whose remains have been secreted in clandestine graves. Several years ago, the fledgling group gained notoriety after they performed a study that employed dead pigs (known as the P.I.G. Study, for Pigs In Ground). The team buried the pigs in varying depths of soil and left some exposed. After having been left exposed to the elements for several months, the team employed a variety of methods (multi-spectrum aerial photography, ground penetrating radar, cadaver dogs, etc.) to determin which methods were most useful under different circumstances of terrain, burial depth, etc. Since then, their fame grew. They are now called out by agencies around the world for assistance in searching for clandestine graves. Dr. Diane LaFrance, a Medical Examiner from Colorado, is one of the premiere members of NecroSearch and routinely gives lectures across the United States and abroad (e.g. the United Kingdom, etc.) as a result of her expertise.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who has a sincere interest in the science of the recovery of human remains, in particular for homicide detectives and crime scene investigators/crimalistics specialists.
