Seller's Description:
332pp. illus. 5 fold-out maps. yellow cloth 8vo: Good+ in a worn but not tattered dj now protected in a poly cover [bookplate; ink name; front hinge is cracked but very firm; else a nice copy with handsome illustrations and fold-out maps] The dramatic story of a small Royal Navy party sent to the Dardanelles in the autumn of 1941 to pilot five Russian ships attempting to run the enemy blockade.
Recommended to me by a friend, I found this adventure thriller superbly gripping. It has all the elements of an exciting novel of naval warfare, while being historically verifiable in every way. I know the location is authentic because "Orchids for Aphrodite" (soon to be published by Seashell) covers the same area by small wooden sailing yacht, which unwittingly traced the route of Adrian Seligman's disguised tanker "Olinda" in 1941/1942 giving it a modern take. Little of Turkey's South West coast has changed. S/Y Cappelle even runs hard aground in the Muslim Channel, just like Olinda, and in almost the same spot. She too was kept under surveillance from Greek and Turkish border posts in the Straits of Samos. "NO STARS TO GUIDE" is highly recommended as a "good read" for armchair adventurers everywhere.
