Most of us could never imagine living in such poverty that we would abandon our children, but it is the heartbreak parents are "almost forced to make". Just in India, there are 11 million children that have been abandoned. The lives these children are then left to live is heartbreaking. Thankfully there is hope for many of these children (and hopefully one day for ALL of these children) through the GFA Bridge of Hope centers.
One thing I was very surprised to learn is that because of their birth, most people in India have no hope of a better life. We often take for granted our lives in the U.S. In our country, we can be born into the poorest family, live in the worst town, and still grow up to be an amazing person with a bright future. That just isn't true in India. Dalits or Untouchables are the lowest rung on the ladder (there is a section in the beginning of the book that explains important terms and concepts, I found this to be very helpful!). When a child is born to a Dalit, they too are a Dalit with no hope or opportunity to move up the ladder to a better future. Because this is how it has always been, they don't know any different, they don't know that God values them just as much as the Brahmin, the highest caste. That is where GFA Bridge of Hope centers differ from the many other groups that work to help children, they not only feed them, educate them, and love them, they also teach them about God. They give them hope, faith, and a brighter future. Many of the children helped by the Bridge of Hope, share their new found faith in God with their families, which gives them hope as well. The stories of faith are touching and something wonderful to read during this Easter season.
"God knows. He hears. He sees their pain. And He has brought us to the point at which we can, by His grace, help do something about it." (No Longer a Slumdog book quote)
The book impacted me so much, that I'm sponsoring a child through them. One of my favorite parts is that 100% of my monthly donation is sent to the mission field, nothing is kept for administration costs.
The book taught me so much and opened my eyes to things I didn't realize were occurring. It is a book that I just want to pass along.
