I have described this book as the prime biography for those interested in Nijinsky because it is a timeless account that utilizes sources no longer available to historian and biographers. The narrative is rich and detailed largely because of the vast material Buckle relied upon to create Nijinsky?s life story; Buckle utilizes correspondences between Diaghilev and Astruc, interviews with dancers, balletomanes and other involved with the ballet, performance reviews and many other interesting sources. All of his hard work culminates into a rich text that covers the majority of Nijinsky?s ?known? life from his school debut to his death in Surrey in 1950. The book is a testament not only to Nijinsky?s grace, athleticism and uncanny ability to capture an audience, but also to the ways in which his social circle defined his legacy. Any serious scholar or fan of Nijinsky will be more than pleased to add this book to their personal collections and bookshelves.
