This is the first zombie book I've ever read. I am also a Star Trek fan, although I've never went to a convention. The story uses many Star Trek references but is aware many non-trekkers may be reading and doesn't hinge the story on the references.
It is written very tongue-in-cheek humor. Although it pokes fun at the trekkers, the Star Trek philosophy helps them in the end.
Since it is my first zombie book (Stephen King's Pet Cemetary doesn't count does it?), The zombie storyline seems traditional from the zombie movies I've seen. Not caused by voodoo, but the zombies behave like movie zombies.
The other villians are quite villianous all of which makes this a fun pulp novel.
