As well as being editor of the local paper, Doc is also an aficionado of the works of Lewis Carroll and enjoys nothing more than spouting verse in Smiley's bar when work is over. The Lewis Carroll references become very important to the storyline and are scattered liberally throughout the book. Before the night is half over, Doc's wishes come true as he is absolutely deluged with exciting stories that would make terrific reading the next morning. From bank robbers, to a factory fire, to the capture of a criminal gang. But as quickly as they break, the stories evaporate leaving him with the prospect of delivering a newspaper with nothing worthwhile to read.

With seeming facility Brown turned out finely honed stories in the genre of science fiction as he did in the mystery field. When I examined this book in my hands I grasped;
"jabberwock" must be a word of some importance. Looking at the front cover illuustration suggested two or three more clues had just popped up. Ah ha! Ready now to open up for a brief sampling of a couple paragraphs..
Weirdly, sensing a wisp of a goose bumpy presentiment of an imminent fiasco, I hop a homebound bullet train , final destination to relax with cold beverage and hot mystery. Arrival at my abode I cannot explain, although I feel the plot-induced stress upon me.
Mysteriously I awaken and ratiocinate that anticipation of reading this wonderful book. It elicits my submission to the (now real) breakneck speed of the fun. Yes, Fredric Brown provides lots of thrills because he CAN lure, only to release the hook when he is good and ready. Whooooo.
