The Arts in Society
Mayakovsky epitomizes both the humanitarian optimism at the beginning stages of the Russian Revolution and its steady decline into but another climate of autocratic despair. It is hard to imagine "the Arts" becoming issues of personal danger but Stalin's reign of terror paid particular notice to the power the Arts can exert. See also Shostakovich's Memoirs.
