At just over 20 minutes in length, A Classic Cartoon Christmas, Too presents a number of excellent gems and a few slices of filler. All the songs are taken from animated Christmas fare. Diehard Rankin/Bass fans will thrill at the inclusion of "Heat Miser" and "Snow Miser." Taken from the cult classic Year Without a Santa Claus, the songs are delightful here, if a bit tinny and somewhat hiss-heavy. The songs are hilarious fun and feature delirious vocals turns from the title characters. Rankin/Bass also contributes the glee-inducing "The First Toymaker to the King" and the Burgermeister's "No More Toymakers to the King" from Santa Claus Is Coming to Town and the sweet, rich Christmas ballad "Silver and Gold" from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, sung by Burl Ives. "There's Always Tomorrow," also from Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, is a bit less charming, as there's no reference to Christmas in its lyrics. "We Wish You a Hairy Chestwig" from Ren and Stimpy is subversive and quite funny, with the title characters singing about yaks and, well, chestwigs. The Madeline song "Holidays" is cute, but rather obscure. "Follow That Star" is a questionable addition, as it's neither funny nor thematically linked to the other classic songs; it sounds like a Peabo Bryson Disney cover. "The Lord's Bright Blessing," from Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol, is a great song, full of warmth, humor, and razzleberry references. At 22 minutes, the collection is far too short, but its great charms make it worth repeat spins. ~ Tim DiGravina, Rovi
