American Imprints 34564 (apparently not including the second title). Sabin 95605: "Several editions of the second part were also published separately." Thomson (1769-1843), "botanic physician and originator of the Thomsonian system of medical treatment, " was a native of New Hampshire and without formal education, teaching himself and learning from other practitioners the healing powers of various plants, including herbs. "The significance of his work lies not in any contribution to medical science but in the strong influence that he created against the prevailing practice of the day, in which bleeding, calomel, and opium were the ruling remedies" (DAB). Front joint and spine ends very worn (front board detached), corners bumped, owner's signature at head of first title page. A good serviceable copy. This edition is of particular note as the first to be printed by John Quincy Adams at the offices of the Boston Investigator, the first American newspaper dedicated to the philosophy of freethought.
