Lippard (1822-54) was an American novelist, journalist, playwright, social activist and labour organiser. The success of his 1845 novel The Quaker City, or The Monks of Monk Hall, exposing city life in antebellum Philadelphia, which sold 60,000 copies in its first year, made him one of America's highest paid writers of the 1840s, earning $3,000 to $4,000 a year.
