The music of Liszt (Mephisto Waltz No. 1) makes its first appearance on a New Year's program, preceded by Johann Strauss Sr.'s Furioso-Galopp, based on themes by Liszt. At that point in the program, the nature of the music seems to pick up a bit, becoming more appealing, endearing, and infectious than the first several selections. Although everything is played with the same level of polish that is expected from the illustrious orchestra, the audience applause confirms that the air has changed.
