Excerpt: ...horns blew clear, The banners swayed In rhythmic movements where they hung; All things were set To melody, --to music strung, And yet, and yet, What minor chord was that he heard, --The gallant host? Beneath the banners where they stirred What shadowy ghost Was that he saw, defiant, grim, Step darkly down To mock the scene, and menace him With warning frown, While still they planned, " next week, next year, ' His careless guests?
