His attitudes, draperies and back grounds are inf1pid and unmeaning; fo ill did he apply to his own praflice the fagacious rules and hints he bellow ed on others. Though he wrote w1t'h fire and judg paintings owed little toeither. No man dived deeper into the inexhauftible fiores of Raphael, or was more fmitten with the native lullre of Vandyck. Yet though capable of tai'ting the elevation of the one, and the elegance of the other, he could never contrive to fee with their eyes, when he was) to copy nature him felf.
