Biographical dictionaries are no new thing; there are many and excellent ones in existence; but they are all more or less bulky and consequently expensive. The aim of the publishers in making this book has been to make it first a thoroughly reliable book of reference then to make it concise, convenient to refer to, and inexpensive. That they have fulfilled this aim there can be no doubt. In the words of one eminently fitted to judge, this Dictionary is a thoroughly reliable work of reference, giving particulars of the world's celebrities, whether living or dead, from the earliest times up to the present date. It also gives the name dc plume of popular writers, with their real names. So carefully has it been edited that so recent an event as the death of Lord Tennyson is noted. While the details are necessarily brief, all the important facts are there.
