Bill Naughton was born in Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo, Ireland, on 12 June 1910. He moved with his family to Bolton at the age of four, where he lived firstly at 30 Unsworth Street, moving to number 8 two years later. He attended St Peter and Paul's School, Pilkington Street, until the age of 14, when he went to work in Kershaws Mill. Interspersed with periods on the dole, he worked as a labourer, long-distance lorry driver, barman and coal-bagger with the Co-op in Bolton. During World War II, Bill Naughton was a conscientious objector and worked as a London driver with the Civil Defence Corps. He wrote several prize-winning plays and documentaries for television and radio, including, for radio, June Evening, Timothy, Seeing a Beauty Queen Home and The Mystery (winner of the Prix Italia in 1974). The 1960s saw him rise to fame and fortune with All in Good Time, Alfie and Spring and Port Wine all presented at the Mermaid Theatre and the West End before transferring to Broadway and subsequently becoming films - a rare achievement. The Family Way won him the Writers Guild of Great Britain Award for Best British Comedy/Screenplay of 1967. In 1968 Bill Naughton retired with his wife Erna to the Isle of Man, but did not stop writing. A Dog Called Nelson was published in 1976 and My Pal Spadger in 1977. On the Pig's Back, the first volume of his autobiographical trilogy, appeared in 1987, followed by Saintly Billy in 1988. Neither Use Nor Ornament (1995) completes the trilogy. Bill Naughton died, aged 81, on 9 January 1992 in Ballasalla, Isle of Man.
