Seller's Description:
8vo, pp. xv, 177. Notes, bibliography, index. Frontis portrait. Turquoise cloth. Edges slightly spotted, o/w a nice copy in lightly scuffed dj. Carroll was a political publicist and writer for the Union. She claimed to have originated the plan to invade the Middle South via the Tennessee and Comberland rivers--a claim that wasn't recognized in her time and is still debated.
This brief, but thorough biography of one of the least-known and most-misunderstood participants in the Civil War is good for both history enthusiasts and the general reader.
Anna Ella Carroll was a walking contradiction. As the granddaughter of the only Catholic signatory to the Constitution, she became stridently anti-Catholic. As a slave owner, she became ardently abolitionist. As a self-proclaimed "Southern Lady", she became a spy for the Union and a shadow member of Lincoln's War Cabinet.
Professor Janet Coryell's overview of this fascinating woman is eminently readable and full of insights into the prosecution of the Civil War and the place of women in that conflict. She draws on letters and original documents to support her arguments, leaving the reader to decide Carroll's influence for themselves.
